Are hashtags still relevant on Instagram in 2024?

Hashtags—they seem to mystify the social media world. One moment we’re all using them on Facebook, and the next, they’re completely irrelevant.

But what about Instagram?

A few years ago, you would never see a post without hashtags. Now that’s becoming more common. And it seems like the advice chops and changes by the day. We went from everyone saying you must use at least 25 to 30 hashtags per post to the head of Instagram telling us to only use 3 to 5. So which advice should you follow?

Now, I’m not saying this is the only way you’ll get good reach on Instagram, but here’s what has been working for my clients:

1. Relevance over quantity

Forget the old mantra of spamming your posts with hashtags. The current trend is all about using highly relevant hashtags that truly resonate with your niche and audience. Quality beats quantity every time, so focus on what’s meaningful to your content and your followers. (Yeah, this can be confusing – let’s walk through it together!)

2. Mix of popular and niche hashtags

Sure, popular hashtags can give you a broader reach, but niche hashtags are where the real engagement lies. Instead of just throwing in #smallbusiness, try something more targeted like #localbusinessbrisbane or #handmadewithlove. This way, you’re connecting with an audience that’s genuinely interested in what you offer.

3. Branded hashtags

Create a branded hashtag that embodies your business. It helps build a community around your brand and makes your content easy to find. Encourage your customers to use it when sharing their experiences with your products or services (if you are a beauty salon try #bestfacialinMelbourne) - this builds connection and engagement!

4. Hashtag placement

Where you place your hashtags matters! You can put them in your caption or in the first comment. Just make sure they fit seamlessly into your post without cluttering your message. A clean caption can do wonders for your engagement. (But don’t worry, we do this for you when we create your content!)

5. Research hashtags

Take the time to regularly check how your hashtags are performing using Instagram Insights. This will help you refine your strategy and discover which hashtags really drive engagement for your posts. It’s all about tweaking your approach for maximum impact.

6. Hashtag limits

Instagram allows up to 30 hashtags per post, but here’s the kicker: using 5-10 focused and relevant ones is often much more effective. Overloading your posts can come off as spammy and may harm your engagement.

7. Track trends

Keep an eye on what’s trending in your industry or local area. Jumping on relevant trends can significantly boost your visibility, but make sure they align with your content and business goals.

Remember, hashtags are still a valuable tool for small businesses aiming to increase their reach on Instagram. However, the key is in the strategy and thoughtful use. If this all sounds exhausting, don’t worry, I got you!
